Rooms And Facilities

Powered sites (2 available)
Price: $25.00 per site for 2 people.  Three people are $35, 4 people are $40
Camper vans or caravans can park behind the new building on a gravelled area.   Guests can use the communal areas.  We do not lock these areas at all.  Come and go as you please.

Tent sites
Price: $11.00 per person.
This also gives you unlimited access to the kitchen, lounge, shower and toilet facilities.  There are a couple of places to pitch your tent.  Our new tent area being developed November 2008 is our native bush area.  We have sown a lawn and surrounded it by mainly native plants to replicate a bush clearing. This past season has seen some problems but we hope to have this rectified before peak season.

Dorm Rooms (dorm room and blue room)
Price: $21.00 per person (extra person is $10pp in room)
At the moment we have 2 rooms with 2 bunks in them, so we have no more than 4 people in a room.  One is connected to the lounge area and the other is separate for those wanting to be away from the main area.  Guests need sleeping bags but can get a sheet for $2, which would make up the bed.  Each bed has a duvet on it also. Heaters provided.  Shared facilities.

Dorm room with ensuite (silver room)
Price: $26.00 per person (extra person is $10 pp in room)
Our new room has 2 bunks in it.  There are a total of 4 people in this room.  The room is fully insulated and has double-glazed windows.  The inside has a kitchenette and a fridge to have a cuppa and breakfast.  The room has a 3 metre deep covered in balcony for outdoor – indoor living.  Also, a table and chairs are on the balcony to enjoy the view.   The beds are fully made up and you have your own shower and toilet.  Heating provided.

Twin share
Twin share is no longer provided.  We are happy to put a mattress on the floor of the double rooms for $50 per room.

Double (green and gold room)
Price: $46.00 per room  (extra person is $10pp in room)
These rooms have a double bed in them. The beds are made up. The rooms have recently been painted and carpeted.  You share bathroom and cooking facilities.  The toilet and shower are close by.  The rooms have heating and are not connected to the main lounge/kitchen area.

Self contained unit
Please click onto the self contained page to view all the features of the room.

Facilities

Common Room
Our common room has kitchen facilities and a lounge area.  We do not have TV (due to reception problems). There are plenty of up to date magazines, games and puzzles to do instead.  We also provide a CD player.  The kitchen has 4 hot plates, a bench top oven, a microwave, a fridge freezer plus a large electric fry pan. Plates, pots etc also provided.

Toilets and showers
There are 2 showers and toilets available for the guests not linked to any ensuite rooms.  One is in the new block and the other is the original shower and toilet situated separately.

Extra sheets
Bedding is available for $2.00.  The beds that require sleeping bags have a clean bottom sheet and pillowcase and a duvet on top.   Add the sheet to make the bed up if you feel like a night out of your sleeping bag.  Let me know in advance and we will make it up for you.

Extra people
Guests who want to put an extra person in their room to keep a group or family together is ok.  We put a mattress on the floor and make it up to suit.  We do charge $10 per person in a room however

Port-a cot
Having a young family we do have a port-a-cot you can use.

BBQ
There is a BBQ now available for you to use.  We have the oil available.

Pool table
Pool table is currently in the woolshed. You can say you have played pool in a working woolshed.  It is right next to the car park. We take it down during shearing generally but can put it up easily if anyone has a special request.

Laundry
Laundry facilities are available but at a cost.  Because of wanting to protect our environment we supply the powder that is not harmful to our soil.  So we charge $5 for a load of washing – with powder supplied and you can use warm water.  The dryer is $5 to dry a load.

Mobile phone coverage is limited.  There is little access to internet so please be prepared when you enter the Catlins and organise as much of your visit the best you can.

Payment
Because we are a small backpackers, we only accept cash.  Eftpos is limited in the south Catlins so do travel prepared.  The Tokanui pub has an ATM now.

Farm Animals
We have a small mob of pet sheep you can hand feed during the main tourist months.  You can also come and look at what is happening the sheep yards and shearing shed.  Andrew shears most of the sheep himself so we do spend a lot of time in the summer in the shed.  Farm dogs can be running around.  If you are scared of dogs please let us know and we will tie them up for you.   We are always happy to answer any questions about the farm.  Unfortunately due to health and safety regulations, we are unable to take most of you out on the farm.  Also we have 3 small children and Andrew works off farm as well so getting time to take you out is fairly limited.   Sometimes children visiting can get a motorbike ride in.

Fuel
Fuel is available.  There is fuel in Tokanui but is not open after 6pm during the week and is only open Saturday morning in weekends.  Colin will open if needed.  Fortrose does have fuel when they are open as well.  Next stop for fuel is Papatowai.

Food
There are several options around the area.
Fortrose has Stirling Tides, which is open during the day and looks out over the estuary.
Pukeko Alley has a dairy at Fortrose as well as an art studio.
Tokanui has the dairy, which has fish and chips etc and the hotel has all day toasties and the bistro is open Thursday through to Sunday.
Next door has the Little Shoppe, selling scones, teas etc and also food to create a meal for people staying.
Curio Bay has the shop at the camping grounds.
Waikawa have the fish and chip caravan.  Very sought after by locals and Niagara have a cafĂ© and meals along side their art and craft gallery.

For the most, backpackers on a budget can prepare a meal here and get their preferred ingredients at a larger town like Invercargill.

We hope to see you at Slope Point Backpackers
We aim to make you feel at home.
