Extra people Guests who want to put an extra person in their room to keep a group or family together is ok. We put a mattress on the floor and make it up to suit. We do charge $10 per person in a room however
Port-a cot Having a young family we do have a port-a-cot you can use.
BBQ There is a BBQ now available for you to use. We have the oil available.
Pool table Pool table is currently in the woolshed. You can say you have played pool in a working woolshed. It is right next to the car park. We take it down during shearing generally but can put it up easily if anyone has a special request.
Laundry Laundry facilities are available but at a cost. Because of wanting to protect our environment we supply the powder that is not harmful to our soil. So we charge $5 for a load of washing – with powder supplied and you can use warm water. The dryer is $5 to dry a load.
Mobile phone coverage is limited. There is little access to internet so please be prepared when you enter the Catlins and organise as much of your visit the best you can. Closest internet is the Waikawa Museum.
Payment Because we are a small backpackers, we only accept cash. Eftpos is limited in the south Catlins so do travel prepared. The Tokanui pub has an ATM now.
Farm Animals We have a small mob of pet sheep you can hand feed during the main tourist months. You can also come and look at what is happening the sheep yards and shearing shed nearby. Andrew shears most of the sheep himself so we do spend a lot of time in the summer in the shed. Farm dogs can be running around. If you are scared of dogs please let us know and we will tie them up for you. We are always happy to answer any questions about the farm. Unfortunately due to health and safety regulations, we are unable to take most of you out on the farm. Also we have 3 small children and Andrew works off farm as well so getting time to take you out is fairly limited. Sometimes children visiting can get a motorbike ride in.
Fuel Fuel is available. There is fuel in Tokanui but is not open after 6pm during the week and is only open Saturday morning in weekends. Colin will open if needed. Fortrose does have fuel when they are open as well. Next stop for fuel is Papatowai or Invercargill.
Food There are several options around the area. Fortrose has Stirling Tides, which is open during the day and looks out over the estuary. Pukeko Alley has a dairy at Fortrose as well as an art studio. Tokanui has the dairy, which has fish and chips etc and the hotel has all day toasties and the bistro is open Thursday through to Sunday. Next door has the Little Shoppe, selling scones, teas etc and also food to create a meal for people staying. Curio Bay has the shop at the camping grounds. Waikawa have the fish and chip caravan. Very sought after by locals and Niagara have a café and meals along side their art and craft gallery.
For the most, backpackers on a budget can prepare a meal here and get their preferred ingredients at a larger town like Invercargill.
Weather If you would like to find out what the weather forecast is while you are in the Catlins then we suggest looking up www.metservice.co.nz.
Road We are located on the Costal Scenic Route, which still has about 14 km’s of unsealed road. If you are unfamiliar with gravel roads, we suggest you take your time – maybe even pull over for faster traveling vehicles. Don’t be put off – it is worth the trip!
We hope to see you at Slope Point Backpackers We aim to make you feel at home.
